The Story of the Starry Night Stout and the Three Wise Men

Starry Night Stout

We now know that the Three Wise Men didn’t make it to Bethlehem until about April because the star they were following couldn’t have been seen over Bethlehem until then, and at the Blackfriars Tavern, we have been saving the Starry Night Stout for the right time.

So, on to the story of the Three Wise Men and the Starry night Stout:

Once upon a time, many years ago, there were three wise men who were traveling from the East to see the newborn king, Jesus. They had been following a bright star that shone in the sky, leading them to their destination. As they traveled through unfamiliar lands, they grew weary and longed for a moment of respite.

One day, as they journeyed through the land of England, they came across a quaint sea-side town called Great Yarmouth. They were drawn to a cozy pub on the outskirts of town, and the sign above the door caught their eye – “The Blackfriars Tavern.” Intrigued, they ventured inside to find a warm and welcoming atmosphere, with some visitors gathered around the bar chatting with locals and other visitors playing Jenga or one of the other table games.

The Three Wise Men took a seat at the bar and ordered a pint of the local famous brew – Starry Night Stout from Tindall Ales Brewery. As they drank, they marvelled at the rich, velvety taste of the beer and the delicate lacing down the partially emptied glass. They could not help but feel a sense of wonder and awe, as if the stars were speaking to them.

As they finished their drinks and prepared to continue on their journey, the wise men could not help but feel that there was something special about the Blackfriars Tavern. They left the pub feeling refreshed and renewed, ready to continue their quest to see the newborn king.

Years later, as they retold the story of their journey to see Jesus, the Three Wise Men fondly remembered their brief stop in Great Yarmouth and the pint of Starry Night Stout that had rejuvenated their spirits. They felt that perhaps the stars had led them to the Blackfriars Tavern for a reason, and that the warmth and hospitality they experienced there had been a small glimpse of the divine.

Of course, we all know that the truth of the matter is that occasionally you may find one wise man in Great Yarmouth, but seldom do you find three wise men together.

Starry Night Stout, available now at The Blackfriars Tavern. See you soon.

CAMRA Discount Vouchers accepted at the Blacfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk

Now Accepting discount vouchers on draught real ales and cider

The Blackfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth now accepts CAMRA (CAMpaign for Real Ale) discount vouchers. This means that you can use up those new discount vouchers which you get as part of your membership, and enjoy a discount on your next visit.

The Blackfriars Tavern is one of the best pubs in East Norfolk, and Great Yarmouth in particular. It is in the 2023 Good Beer Guide (previously was in the 2022 GBG), and is also the East Norfolk CAMRA (campaign for real ale) Runner Up Pub of the Year for 2022.

Previously, the only local places that use of these vouchers was available was large chain pubs, but we are pleased to be involved in the scheme for the first time, and we have been added to the list of official pubs that take the discount vouchers.

How Does It Work?

CAMRA (campaign for real ale) discount vouchers can be used on draft Real Ale and draft Cider sold at the Blackfriars Tavern.

The discount vouchers must be accompanied by a valid CAMRA membership card.

Each CAMRA (campaign for real ale) discount voucher gives a discount against a pint of beer, ales or cider, but each discount voucher can also be used on combinations other than pints, including 2 half pints or 3 one third of a pint of draught beer and cider, and these do not need to be the same product.

Come and Use Those Vouchers On Real Ale or Cider

If you’re in the area, be sure to check it out! Great Yarmouth is a great place to visit, and the Blackfrairs Tavern is a great place to get a discount. So, if you’re looking for a Great Yarmouth pub that accepts CAMRA vouchers, look no further than the Blackfrairs Tavern for a discount on some lovely local real ales and cider!

Things To Do In Great Yarmouth

Time and Tide Museum

The Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth is a fascinating attraction that tells the story of the town’s rich maritime history. The museum is located in the former J.R.N. Tower Curing Works, which was one of the largest commercial curing works in Great Yarmouth. The buildings have been lovingly restored and converted into a museum that offers visitors a unique insight into the town’s past.

The Time and Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth

The museum is divided into three main areas: The Herring Era, which focuses on the town’s history as a hub of the herring industry; Seaside Holidays, which explores the town’s transformation into a popular tourist destination in the 19th and 20th centuries; and Great Yarmouth and its People, which delves into the social and cultural history of the town.

How to get from the Blackfriars Tavern to the Time and Tide Museum

One of the highlights of the museum is the recreated fish wharf, which gives visitors a sense of what life was like for the fishermen and workers who made their living from the sea. The wharf includes a herring packing shed, smokehouses, and a curing shop, as well as a number of fishing boats.

Another fascinating exhibit is the ‘Row Houses‘, which are a series of small rooms that have been recreated to show what life was like for the town’s poorer residents in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The rooms are small and cramped, with basic furnishings and limited amenities, and give visitors a sense of the harsh realities of life for many of the town’s residents.

The museum also has a number of interactive exhibits, including a fishing simulator that allows visitors to experience what it’s like to work on a fishing boat, and a Victorian funfair that gives a glimpse into the town’s seaside entertainment in the past.

Lindemans Faro Lambic

4.5% Lambic Style Faro, usually available at The Blackfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth, FB: BlackfriarsTavern

A version of Belgium’s “wild-fermented” wheat beer, which is the result of blending Lambic of “one summer” with old Lambic and chaptalized with candy sugar.

Faro is an intriguing balance of wineyness and sweetness. This was probably the beer being served in Breugel’s paintings of Flemish Village Life.Faro is a delicious accompaniment of a whole assortment of desserts.

Lindemans Pecheresse

2.5% Lambic Style Fruit Beer, usually available at The Blackfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth, FB: BlackfriarsTavern

Pecheresse has been developed by Lindemans brewery, using straight juice-method. The result is a fresh fruity drink with the background of the rich bouquet of Lambic.

Golden in colour, with a nose that fills the room with fresh peaches. Sparkling, crisp and refreshing balance of fruit and acid.

After a couple of years Oerbier tastes like it has been blended with wine… Oerbier has been refermented in the bottle and contains a layer of yeast, having vitamins B. NAT en STRAF on the glasses means WET and STRONG, a warning for the 9 vol. alcohol content. The little person on the glasses is the Oerbier man, a simple creature who holds a brewers fork in his right hand, symbolizing the work and science, but looking to the other side, the result of all this, the glass of (Oer)beer. The artwork on the poster is a wall painting found in Spain (Altamira) and is considered by art lovers as being the best prehistoric art work (30.000 years BC). On the other hand we have Oerbier started in 1980, continuing the tradition.

Since 2000 as the yeast supply ceased, we installed a new yeast propagator. The tart aftertaste is obtained by lacto bacterial fermentation (since 2005).
